Jewish Renewal is a spiritual movement for progressive Jews that fosters a personal connection to the Divine by infusing ancient Jewish wisdom with a modern, egalitarian, and socially progressive consciousness.
Jewish Renewal draws on the philosophy of Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, z”l, who called on us to continue the ongoing renewal of Jewish life in our time, as the Talmudic rabbis did in theirs. Being part of this ongoing creative project of Jews who seek to renew Judaism helps to bring spiritual and ethical vitality into our lives, our communities, and the world.
In the P’nai Or prayer space, you may experience this energy through ‘davvenen’ influenced by Reform Judaism, Reconstructionism, Orthodoxy, and Hassidism that blends tradition with modern liturgy and music.
Jewish Renewal is built on the idea that we live in a transformative moment in time, in which a new type of spiritual life is being developed.
In essence, we seek to experience the joy of Judaism rather than the oy!

“My heart and soul were opened to the Divine in a new way. Prayers that I have sung for years took on a new meaning as I sang/chanted from my soul. Not needing the siddur, praying from my heart.”
